On this day in Henry County history, Dec. 5, 1941, Ed Ogborne, a journalist at The Courier-Times, wrote that Lewisville's Ted Smith was the current scoring leader in the Henry County Conference with an 11-point per game average. "Ted, a guard who will tackle a buzz saw, is a young brother of Bill Smith, Trojan of a dozen years ago," Ogborne wrote.Ogborne was a talented journalist whose eloquent columns were published in a book called "Fancy Free." That book can be found at the Indiana Room of the New Castle-Henry County Public Library.The last column in that red book was particularly poignant. It was sealed in an envelope with the words "To be opened only in the event of my death." It was like Ogborne speaking to readers from the grave.The book is also available to view at the Henry County Historical Society. The museum is open 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and by appointment on Saturday. Only 3 copies of this 224-page coffee table-style book remain at the Henry County Historical Society. The book, which sold out of two printings in the early 1990s, was updated and expanded in 2023 in honor of New Castle's 200th birthday.The book is being offered at a discount through the holidays. Normally $50, it is being sold for $40 while supplies last. If we sell the remaining three, we'll take names on a waiting list and order more.Visit the museum at 606 S. 14th St. Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to pick up yours. These two books are still available at holiday discount prices. Hidden History of Henry County and The Henry County Hurricane are both priced at $15 throughout the holiday season.
