On this day in Henry County history, Jan. 16, 1908, the first roller polo contest ever was played in New Castle at a North Main Street location that would later become well-known as the site of the city's Coca Cola Bottling Plant. The photo here shows that Coca Cola plant.The roller polo contest did not occur in the building pictured here; rather it was played in the building that preceded the construction of the Coca Cola plant at this same North Main Street location.According to the Centennial Edition of The Courier-Times, the game was between a semi-professional team of Muncie players representing New Castle versus the regular Indianapolis club. The Indianapolis team won, 2-1."The contest occurred before a crowd of 500 persons in the then-skating rink erected by the late Paul Jamison on the North Main Street site where the Coca Cola Bottling Co. is putting up a new plant," the centennial edition of the Courier reported.BASKETBALL LIVES HEREThis day in Henry County history is brought to you by Destination Henry County, Indiana. On Jan. 15, 1905, Nimrod R. Elliott, who helped organize the Farmers' State Bank in Middletown, died at the age of 78. Elliott was a Presidential elector in 1884, casting his vote for Grover Cleveland. He ran as a Democrat for Congress in 1894, but lost to Richmond Republican Henry U. On Jan. 14, 1982, Shenandoah's Scott Ramsey and New Castle's Steve Alford led the county in high school basketball scoring average. On this date in Henry County history, Jan. 13, 1844, a legislative act decreed it was unlawful to sell or barter any spirituous or fermented liquors in the Town of Greensboro in quantities less than ten gallons at any one time for any purpose whatever except medicinal or sacramental. Fines ranged from $1 to $3.This law was likely part of the growing temperance movement and early local option laws that gave towns control over alcohol sales, with this law targeting sales in small quantities.
