Needlework Exhibit~Lace & Doilies

Examples of tatting and crocheting in doilies.  Doilies were sometimes called antimacassars.  An antimacassar was a piece of cloth laid on the back of a chair or the arms of a chair to protect the furniture’s upholstery from grease and oils.  Men used to wear Macassar oil to smooth their hair, which would leave stains on furniture.
