A chautauqua was summertime education! For adults and children alike, beginning in 1910 and lasting until 1927, a “Redpath” chautauqua was held in Henry County, first at the corner of South Main Street and Plum Street, later at the YMCA or North 14th Street fairgrounds, under a tent. Events included operatic performances, morning story hours for children, classical music concerts, patriotic pageants. The coming of radio and motion pictures caused chautauquas to die out.
