On this day in Henry County history, July 16, 1984, planning was under way for Spiceland Freedom Days with retired Citizens State Bank official Paul Reece Jr. serving as the parade grand marshal. Paul served as manager Citizens State Bank's Spiceland branch for 30 years. A World War II veteran, Paul died March 14, 1995. Interestingly, he was the son of Paul Revere Reece Sr. His mom was Goldie Marie Chew Reece.Do you remember Paul Reece Jr.? Do you have a photo of him you'd like to share? Spiceland Freedom Days began in the summer of 1976 by a group of dedicated citizens who wanted to celebrate the bicentennial of our country. Thanks to its success, the festival became a yearly event. If July 13 was one of the happiest calendar days in the history of the Odd Fellows Lodge, July 14 had to be the saddest.On July 13, 1848, the oldest fraternal order in New Castle, the Odd Fellows Lodge, was chartered. Fast-forward 151 years and a day, July 14, 1999, the grand old building at the corner of Main and Race streets collapsed in a roar of falling bricks.A photo featured here from the Henry County Genealogical Services website shows the building site after the collapse.Late history enthusiast Bud Bush wrote that the New Castle Odd Fellows Lodge was one of the oldest and most prosperous organizations in Henry County. The following were the charter members: John C Buck, John Corr, James Comstock and James V. Wayman. No one knows where the first meetings were held, but in the Jan. 12, 1860 issue of the New Castle Courier, it mentioned the dedication of their new hall."The hall is in the third story of a neat and tasteful brick building, erected during the past season, by Messrs. H. & J.Shroyer, and is a fine, lighted, and well ventilated room, 28 by 50 feet in size."They met here until the building on South Main Street was finished in 1875. In the 1880s, the Mowrer Drug Store used the lower floor. And on the upper floor was a large hall, finely furnished, in which the lodge met. This building was finished in 1875, and dedicated on the 27th of May. The total membership in 1884 was 75.On July 14, 1999, the building collapsed from old age. Due to many bricks being replaced by large plate glass display windows, the structure became unstable. Randy Neal had the job of cleaning up the debris.Do you remember the Odd Fellows Lodge? July of 1986 was a most memorable month for Shenandoah High School graduate Shawn Barker, who was doing double all-star duty.On this date in Henry County history, Barker was preparing for not one, but two all-star high school sporting events. He had been selected as a member of the South All-Star team and was looking forward to playing in the 12th annual Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association all-star series at Kokomo High School. A doubleheader was planned on Saturday, July 19, 1986, with a single game scheduled the next day.Barker had earned a spot on the all-star baseball team by finishing with an 8-1 record, striking out 100 batters in 68.2 innings and posting a 1.43 earned run average.A week after the baseball all-star series, Barker was planning to suit up for the South on the football field as a wide receiver. On this day in Henry County history in July of 1945, city officials were in deep gratitude to the Moose Lodge for their donation of an iron lung. The presentation was made on the courthouse lawn. Pictured, front row, left to right, are Clarence Earns and Clifford York. Row Two: Percy Scott, Capt. Delmer Cole, Mayor Sid Baker, Mildred Land, J. C. Robertson, Earl Gates & O. H. Hoover. Row Three: George VanZant, Stanley Harding, Wesley Lee, Robert Hill, Kenneth Partain and Henry Rantz.An iron lung is a type of negative pressure ventilator that was historically used to help people with polio breathe when their respiratory muscles were paralyzed. It's a large, airtight metal tank that encloses the patient's body, leaving only the head exposed, and uses changes in air pressure to force the lungs to inhale and exhale. While largely replaced by modern ventilators, the iron lung remains a significant part of medical history, particularly in the fight against polio.
