On this day in Henry County history, Jan. 13, 1844, a legislative act decreed it unlawful to sell or barter any spirituous of fermented liquors in the Town of Greensboro in quantities of less than 10 gallons at any one time for any purpose whatever, except medicinal or sacramental. On this day in Henry County history, Jan. 10, 1890, fire destroyed the City Carriage Works. The fire was discovered about 7 a.m. Friday morning. Owing to the inflammable condition of some of the material stored in the building, which was an old frame structure, the fire spread very rapidly and before the fire company could respond to the call, the fire had spread throughout the building. The photo here, courtesy the digital files of the late Mike Bertram, shows horses and a carriage belonging to L. A. Jennings at Idlewild on North 16th Street in 1880. Although we're not sure, the carriage here could have been manufactured by the City Carriage Works.The City Carriage Works was one of the leading industries of the town and in its destruction, the city sustains a serious loss. On this day in Henry County history, Jan. 10, 1846, a law passed by the Indiana General Assembly incorporated the first railroad company to have projected lines running through Henry County.And the railroad whistles have been heard here ever since.Articles in the Indiana Courier -- a newspaper which ultimately became The Courier-Times -- spoke to the need of railroads, particularly by farmers.An editorial in the Nov. 23, 1844 issue of The Indiana Courier stated that when New Orleans and Cincinnati corn prices were compared to the ones in Henry County, "it would not be a hard matter for the farmers here to see that they might make thousands of dollars annually if they had a railroad to Ohio.""In 1850, there were 39,387 swine being raised in Henry County, which had a population of only 17,605 inhabitants," an article in Herbert Heller's Historic Henry County, Vol. 1, stated.The article added: "The ringing crack of the whip and shout of the driver in our streets reminds us that Hog season is again upon us. On this day in Henry County history, Jan. 9, 1926, a prominent early citizen died. George Hazzard, a former Henry County treasurer and early historian who organized Citizens State Bank, passed away in Tacoma, Wash. at the age of 86.Hazzard is the author of a two-volume illustrated history of Henry County and our link to the pioneer period. His maternal grandfather was Asahel Woodward, the first white settler of New Castle.Hazzard organized Citizens State Bank in 1873 and, at the same time, was author of laws governing state banks passed by the Indiana General Assembly.
