On this day in Henry County history, April 2, 1982, New Castle Kiwanis Club members were celebrating rapid completion of a $40,000 fund drive to purchase a new First Aid unit for the city. Mayor Bud Ayers congratulated Kiwanis Club President Bob Bowman and fund drive chairman Sam Hall for completing the drive in less than three months, the shortest time span for such a drive in memory.BASKETBALL LIVES HEREThis Day In Henry County history is brought to you by Destination Henry County Indiana. On this day in Henry County history, April 1, 1884, a tornado did extensive damage to the Middletown area and claimes the life of James Sanders, who was killed by a falling building.The graphic used here is just a stock photo, NOT a photo of the 1884 event.According to the National Weather Service, a tornado with a path ¼ milewide and 10 miles long stretched from Oakville in Delaware County to Luray in Henry County. Sanders was one of eight people killed. At least 50 were injured. In Oakville, all but five of the 45 buildings in town are levelled. On March 31, 1943, the Royal Theatre was showing “Tarzan Triumphs,” starring Johnny Weissmuller.The Royal Theatre can be seen in this photo between the Coca Cola sign and the Morris sign. At the time this photo was taken, apparently a dinosaur-themed movie was playing. Unfortunately, we don't have a date on the photo.Back in those days, New Castle had as many as four popular movie theatres.
