On this day in Henry County history, Nov. 20, 1983, beloved New Castle military veteran Vint Hill celebrated his 100th birthday. A 1902 Carthage High School graduate, Hill served in the U.S. Army during the Philipine Insurrection.Hill had a keen sense of humor. At his 100th birthday celebration, he said "I appreciate all of you being here today. On this date in Henry County history, Nov. 19, 1985, Becker Brothers Master Market was a busy place as Henry County shoppers prepared for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The market was located at 1713 S. On this date in Henry County history, Nov. 18, 1836, a child was born on Philip Moore's farm in Blue River Township. The child? Miles Marshall Moore, who grew up to inherit his father's land. On Aug. 9, 1882, the town of Mooreland was laid out, platted and acknowledged by the younger Moore. Thus, the town was named for him.Some may not realize the man Mooreland was named after fought in the Civil War.Here is information from the Friday, April 16, 1886 Courier:"Miles M. Moore, farmer, post office Mooreland, was born in Blue River Township, Nov. 18, 1836, the third son of Philip and Julia Ann (Willson) Moore. His boyhood was spent with his parents, receiving his education in the district schools. When twenty-four years of age he took a trip West, and after his return home remained with his father till Aug. 27, 1861, when he enlisted in Company C, Thirty-second Indiana Infantry, and participated in the battles of Perryville, Ky., Stone River, Tenn. (where they were under fire nine days),and Chickamauga; from there fell back to Chattanooga, where they remained till early winter. In the spring the division was assigned to the command of General Hooker, and took part in the battle of Lookout Mountain; assisted General Sherman at Mission Ridge, and the battle of White Oak Ridge. From Ringgold the division fell back to Whitesides, and remained there until spring, and while on the march, ten miles from Chattanooga, he received an order from General Thomas to report at his headquarters in Chattanooga for signal service duty.After being drilled eight weeks, he was ready for duty, and served about nine months. He participated in the engagement at Resaca, Ga., and the Atlanta campaign, where his last service was performed in the top of a tree sixty feet from the ground.He was discharged at Atlanta, Sept. 15, 1864, and returned home. March 26, 1865,Moore died less than four years after the town of Mooreland was formed, on April 14, 1886. On this day in history, Nov. 17, 2008, demolition began on what remained of the St. Anne Catholic Church, which had been destroyed in an arson fire April 7, 2007. It took about three weeks to complete.This photo, taken by St. Anne Church member Doug Magers, speaks volumes about the faithfulness and determination of the congregation. A new church in the same Broad/N. 19th Street location was dedicated Feb. 28, 2010.A beautiful 356-page hard-cover, coffee-table style book entitled "St. Anne And Her People" was written and published by Doug Magers in 2010. The book chronicles St. Anne's life in New Castle, from the very beginning through the fire and on into the 21st century.
