“Scorching” was actually an offense that one could be arrested for doing…racing a bicycle down a main street of town! Also, if you had a penny farthing, or a bicycle with a 6-foot front tire, you could participate in a “coasting contest.” The rider would go as fast as he could from Main to 12th Street, then take his feet off the pedals and coast down the West Broad Street hill.
