The entertainment world was stunned by news of Gene Hackman’s death Wednesday alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home.
Here in Henry County, Indiana, more than 1,300 miles away, there were no doubt many reflections and memories about Hackman, whom some got to meet and interact with while he was filming scenes from the hit movie, “Hoosiers” in Knightstown.
This old journalist and Henry County historian had a chance to briefly interview Hackman at the Hoosier Gym when he was there one day during the six weeks producers were in Knightstown filming scenes for the movie.
I had the opportunity to interview Hackman for a few minutes and found him to be very gracious.
In Mt. Summit, some no doubt remember how well-known citizen Ralph “Whitey” Shively took Hackman into “Sparky’s Dog House” for one of the establishment’s famous steak sandwiches. Whitey’s daughter, Debby, was extras casting director for the movie. Whitey is actually in the movie for a few scenes as “Doc” Buggins, who tends to an injured player with the words “Oh mercy, let’s get him on his feet.”
When Coach Dale implores Buggins to “stitch him up,” the response is a memorable “I can’t do it.”
I remember on the 10th anniversary of the movie, a special showing was held in the Castle Theatre and Whitey was in the audience. When he first appears on the big screen, Whitey stood up and exclaimed “There I am,” to the laughter and applause of the packed crowd.
“Hoosiers” is widely considered to be one of the best sports movies ever. Knightstown’s role in movie continues to reap major benefits for Henry County tourism, as thousands visit each year. I’m sure many residents here, especially those who were movie extras and those who encountered Hackman, are saddened by his passing.
