On this day in Henry County history, May 20, 1977, "Kent Benson Days" were proclaimed in New Castle by Mayor Gary Marcum. The designation came in honor of the 1973 New Castle graduate and Indiana Mr. Basketball after he led Bobby Knight's Indiana Hoosiers to the NCAA basketball championship and a perfect 32-0 season. In the national championship game, Benson scored 25 points with 9 rebounds in the Hoosiers' 86–68 victory over Michigan.Benson is pictured here with teammate Tom Abernethy. The final game capped a great tournament for Benson. He scored 20 points with 13 rebounds against St. John's in the 90–70 regional quarterfinal win; He scored 15 points and had five rebounds in the 74–69 sweet sixteen win over Alabama; In the Regional Final, he scored 18 points with 9 rebounds in the 65–56 win over Marquette; In the Final Four semi-final 65–51 victory against UCLA, Benson had 16 points and 9 rebounds. In his high school career, Benson scored 1,496 points and had 1,585 rebounds in three varsity seasons playing for Coach Cecil Tague. Even after 50 years, Benson still ranks high on Henry County's all-time scoring list, unofficially number 11.BASKETBALL LIVES HEREThis Day In Henry County history is brought to you by Destination Henry County Indiana. On May 18, 1984, Mt. Lawn Speedway began having Friday night races after previously having many years of Sunday night events. Founded in 1934, Mt. Lawn is long considered one of the oldest family owned racetracks in the United States. The photo here, courtesy Gene Ingram, is from 1949.Because of the current weather situation Mt Lawn officials have decided to postpone opening night of the 2026 season to next Saturday May 23. The May 5-0’s originally scheduled for the 23rd will be bumped to the 30th to allow teams to get a race under their belts in preparation for the big 50 lap events of the May 5-0’s.BASKETBALL LIVES HEREThis Day In Henry County history is brought to you by Destination Henry County Indiana.
