NEW CASTLE –— Columbus actress Charlotte Battin will present an encore performance of her Underground Railroad drama entitled “Freedom Is My Home” this Saturday at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library auditorium.

Battin’s noon performance is sponsored by The Henry County Historical Society and the New Castle-Henry County Public Library.

In October, a large crowd came to the historical society museum in New Castle to see Battin’s one-woman drama and hear about the courage, danger and inspiration that those who helped slaves find their freedom faced daily on the Underground Railroad.

“Since her performance, there seems to be a renewed interest in the topic, judging by the books we’ve sold at the museum,” said Darrel Radford, executive director of The Henry County Historical Society.

Youngsters and veteran history enthusiasts alike are invited to take a trip back in time and learn what it was like to be part of the Underground Railroad. Battin – who has appeared in commercials with NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and had roles in movies – says the play is appropriate for youngsters as well as adults.

Darrel Radford, executive director of the Henry County Historical Society, says the event is a golden opportunity for those who love history.

“Charlotte Battin is an accomplished dramatist who will help everyone understand the courage so many had to help slaves find their freedom,”” Radford said. “”We are excited to have her back, especially considering the role Henry County citizens in Greensboro and Spiceland played in the Underground Railroad.”
