On this day in Henry County history, May 8, 1986, Hancock County Chief Deputy Malcolm Grass, a resident of Shirley, died in the line of duty, the victim of a gun battle between extortion suspects and FBI agents.Pictured here is a tribute to Grass in Shirley along with a photo of him.Here is a tribute Grass received after his death."The year 1986 seems like yesterday. Thanks for always taking the time to stop and shoot the bull when I was working in that quiet little town of Shirley. I think of you often, you are missed but never forgotten. You were a hero to me and to many people. You always took the time to help and never said know to assisting a fellow officer. You are missed and loved by many. Your Nephew Shawn has inherited many of your excellent qualities and is passing them on to his sons. God Bless to Kerry, Mark and Carolyn and all of your family. We will never forget you and thanks for looking over us."If people only knew how well respected you were by so many. Your funeral was attended by hundreds from many states. We miss you and that ornery smile. On this day in Henry County history, May 6, 1986, Dr. Lynn Bowers and Dr. Mark Smith each received 2,017 votes for a New Castle school board seat. The tie was ultimately broken by Henry Circuit Court Judge John Kellam, who said Bowers was doing an outstanding job as Henry County Health Officer and Smith likewise as a school board member, so the two should remain in their current positions. Dr. Bowers later served on the school board for several years and was board president at times. Over the years he served as an officer in the Henry County Health Department, the Director of Henry County March of Dimes, a Pediatric Consultant for the New Castle State Developmental Center, as well as the Co-Director of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home. Dr. Bowers died Feb. 18, 2010, at the age of 64. Dr. Smith served on the school board for 21 years, and was a surgeon for 31 years. He died July 8, 1989, from injuries in a car accident June 27, the same accident that resulted in the death of his wife, Jan a few days earlier.BASKETBALL LIVES HEREThis Day In Henry County history is brought to you by Destination Henry County Indiana. On this date in Henry County history, May 5, 1989, then-State Rep. Doug Kinser surprised Dunreith native Gretchen Kiger Cryer with the Sagamore of the Wasbash award at the opening night of the dramatic production "I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It On the Road." Kiger co-wrote the show and performed in it. It ran in New York City for more than two years. A daughter of Earl and Louise Kiger Jr. of Dunreith, Gretchen's son, Jon, is a well-known actor who starred in the television series hit Two and A Half Men.Kinser, a 12-year New Castle City Councilman who served as a state representative for seven years, died July 20, 2025. On this day in history, May 4, 1863, the Jerry Mason Grand Army of Republic Post No. 168 was instituted at Knightstown. Mason was a lieutenant who was killed in the battle of Chickamauga, Ga., on Sept. 20, 1863.
