For the fifth consecutive year, the Henry County Historical Society is pleased to present a Black History Month Spotlight post on our Facebook page for each day of February. Today, we remember Greensboro school, which may have been integrated long before many others.The small Henry County community west of New Castle was one of the biggest anti-slavery centers in the area, with Seth Hinshaw and his free produce store setting the tone. Henry County Historical Society board member Kevin Stonerock shared this photo with us. He thinks it is from around 1900."The African American boys in the picture are Earl Hoosier (who was known in later years to nearly all Greensboro residents as "Shine" (third row, second from left) and one of his brothers in the back row," Kevin said. "This one would either be Willie or Claude. My best guess is Willie since he was older than Claude. Earl and his wife resided in Greensboro and were well-liked and respected members of the community. Earl was born in 1888 and died in 1966. Such a nice man. I remember him well. His father was Frank Hoosier, born into slavery in the late 1850's or in 1860." On this day in Henry County history, Feb. 27, 1860, many local residents were still celebrating the election of Abraham Lincoln as our nation's 16th president. Lincoln was preparing for a March 4 inauguration ceremony that year. He had defeated Stephen Douglas and two other candidates by a wide margin.In Henry County, Lincoln received 2,726 votes, more than double that of Democrat Douglas.Henry County has multiple links to Lincoln. Pictured here is a late 1800s view of the Murphy building at the corner of Broad and Main streets in New Castle. Here is a column written by Henry County Historian Darrel Radford, which explains the building's significance and its link to Lincoln..By DARREL RADFORDHistorically SpeakingWith the success of Stephen Speilberg's movie "Lincoln," it's interesting to consider Henry County's connections to the 16th president. Here are a couple some may not realize:Miles MurpheyWhether they realize it or not, anyone stopped at the intersection of Broad and Main streets in New Castle -- the intersection where the Murphey Building resides -- is in historic Lincoln territory. The man who had that building constructed in the 1840s (where the Chamber and EDC offices are located today) was a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln's.Col. Miles Murphey was a legislator and businessman in New Castle. Built in the 1850s to house his store, the structure is the oldest in the downtown business district and one of the oldest in Henry County.In his "Historic Henry County" series, Herbert Heller reveals the relationship between Murphey and Lincoln through the writing of well-known New Castle artist Helen Magner."Although they were from the south, the family hated slavery and took part in the heated politics of the decades before the Civil War," Magner wrote. "Miles Murphey was elected from Henry County as a member of the (Indiana) House of Representatives in 1837. He heard the Lincoln and Douglas debates, and when Lincoln was nominated, he was a delegate to the convention in Chicago. That same year, he was one of the Electoral College that voted for Lincoln."He came to know Lincoln personally and on several occasions, he and his wife, Elizabeth, were guests of the Lincolns at their home in Springfield. It was there that Lincoln gave him a book in which he autographed using the initial 'A' instead of 'Abraham' as he could do only among friends."Letter to Spiceland WomanOn Oct. 26, 1863, Spiceland resident Caroline Edgerton received a letter from President Lincoln and a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. She had requested it on behalf of the local Ladies Aid Society, a relief organization for Civil War soldiers."According to the request made in your behalf, the original draft of the Emancipation Proclamation is herewith inclosed. The formal word at the top and the conclusion, except the signature, you perceive, are not in my handwriting. They were written at the state department, by whom I know not. The printed part was cut from the preliminary proceedings and pasted on merely to save writing."I had some desire to retain the paper, but if it shall contribute to the relief or comfort of the soldiers, that will be better."Your Obt, Serv'tA. On this day in Henry County history, Feb. 26, 1986, gas prices had fallen to 86 cents per gallon.Pictured here, courtesy the digital archives of the late Mike Bertram, is a scene from 1975 -- Ed Sumpter at the Clark Station on the southeast corner of Broad and 17th streets. Today, we honor New Castle bus driver Sam Buchanon, who may have been the most joyful city bus driver the city ever had.Anyone who rode the city bus Sam drove will no doubt remember his wide smile and enthusiastic greeting during the trip. He frequently offered his Christian testimony to passengers as they rode. But you didn't have to be on the bus to receive Sam's greeting.
