On this day in Henry County history, April 9, 1923, members of Nazarene Church in New Castle were planning dedication ceremonies for their brand new church.That building, seen here thanks to the archives of Doug Magers, was dedicated on April 29, 1923.Located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and 18 Street, the building featured a Spanish design with three sides and three gables. The entrance was on the Grand Avenue side. Charles W. On this day in Henry County history, April 8, 1823, the town of New Castle was platted, formed from about 100 acres donated by owners of land near what is now Broad and Main streets. Charles Jamison was listed as the chief “proprietor.”Here is one of the oldest-known photos of New Castle, courtesy Doug Magers' historic photo collection.. It shows Broad Street from the early 1870s. Click on the photo to make it larger.Asahel Woodward came to this place we now know as New Castlein 1819. He was 28 years old at the time. Many historians regard himas the first settler here. He would start farming on 450 acres in whatwould be the north and northwest portion of the New Castle we know today. Woodward Avenue on the city’s northwest side is named in his honor. Scott Chambers, who was editor of The Courier-Times for 50 years, once wrote “The trees were budding, the valley was more beautiful than ever and God seemed close to the banks of Blue River. Here was food for his flesh and soul and Asahel Woodward became the first citizen of New Castle.”Some disagree, contending Allen Shepherd was the first New Castle settler, having come here from New Castle On Tyne England. Some believe that is where New Castle got its name.But many others say New Castle was named after New Castle, Henry County, Kentucky, the home of Ezekial Leavell. Leavell was the first agent appointed to sell land here.
